Before there was Barbiecore, there was Elle Wood’s pink and Reese Witherspoon is here to remind everyone of that.

For her appearance at Amazon’s inaugural upfront presentation on May 14, the actress and producer, 48, slipped back into her Legally Blonde character to announce the hit film franchise’s prequel, Elle.

Witherspoon stepped onto the stage carrying a Chihuahua and dressed in pink. Her stylist, Petra Flannery, selected a hot pink Dolce & Gabbana blazer and pleated skirt to go with her baby pink Christian Louboutin slingback heels.

If you ever wondered “why pink?” the film's costume designer, Sophie De Rakoff, explained how they stumbled upon Elle’s signature color in a past interview with Entertainment Weekly.

"The backstory is, Reese and I, and maybe the production designers, went to visit some sororities [in downtown Los Angeles]. We knew that she needed a signature color, and we were like, 'Do we really want it to be pink? It's so on the nose. It's so feminine. Could we do lavender? Could we do light blue? Is there another color that we could do?' When we met all the sorority girls, it had to be pink."

The Big Little Lies actress also shared an Instagram video of her transforming into Elle before unveiling the project at at the New York City event.

“Before she became the most famous Gemini vegetarian to graduate from Harvard Law, she was just a regular ‘90s high school girl. And all of you are going to get to know her, next year on @primevideo. I’M SO EXCITED!” Witherspoon captioned the clip.

As the title of the series suggests, Elle will follow Elle Woods through her high school years. According to a release shared with PEOPLE, the prequel delves into “the life experiences that shaped her into the iconic young woman we came to know and love in the first Legally Blonde film.”

Witherspoon, whose production company Hello Sunshine is tackling the series, will serve as executive producer alongside Lauren Neustadter, Lauren Kisilevsky, Marc Platt and creator Laura Kittrell.

Although it’s been 23 years since Witherspoon first starred in the 2001 rom-com (and 21 since she reprised her role in Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde), she’s kept her wardrobe close at hand.

In 2019 she revealed that she kept all of Elle’s costumes from the 2003 sequel, and that includes her sizable collection of Jimmy Choo shoes — all 77 pairs of them.

“I had it written in my contract,” Witherspoon said. She “never touched them” but “tried them all on” after she took them out of storage on the 15th anniversary of the film. Even her daughter Ava Phillippe, now 24, was able to reap the benefits of her mom’s epic archives. “Some of them fit, some of them didn’t,” she said. “It was really cool.”
