Regal cinema to run 'full-on, fun weekend of creativity' in 48 hour film challenge

The Regal Cinema in Fordingbridge has just announced an exciting, new film-making challenge for budding or experienced film makers.

Participants are being challenged to write, shoot and edit a film in 48 hours, and those who successfully make a short film will see their finished short film on the big screen.

Regal volunteer Pete Doherty said: “We were delighted - and very grateful - to get some generous financial support from Culture in Common, a great local organisation working with New Forest residents to plan inspiring and accessible creative activities for our local area.

“Join in our free optional film-making workshop the weekend before the actual challenge and learn some tips and tricks from an industry professional to help your team’s film win one of the Regal Film Challenge Awards.

“You can use your mobile phone’s camera (or even professional gear if you’re lucky enough to have it) but remember great story-telling is probably more important than picture quality!”

At the Film Challenge Start event, each team (a maximum of six people) will be given a briefing on the evening of Friday, August 2, and assigned a randomly allocated film genre and a specific object to include in a film.

Then, each team will have just 48 hours until Sunday, August 4, to make a short film between 4 - 10 minutes long.

Barry Robbins, who runs The Regal Cinema, said: “That means writing a script, casting your film, finding locations, shooting your short film, editing it and delivering it ready to watch within 2 days by the agreed deadline!

“The qualifying films will be screened for all team members at The Regal in front of a panel of judges who will present award trophies to the best films in a number of categories. The overall winner of ‘Best Film’ will take home their trophy and get the chance to have a free private hire of the Regal!”

There is an entry fee per team to cover admin and award costs. Teams must submit an application form by July 18.

Pete said: “Remember this is open to all – experienced film makers and those who are new to it. We’d love to see some young film-makers too but for safeguarding reasons under 18s must have an adult as part of the team

“Based on my previous experience of similar film challenges, it’s a full-on, fun weekend of creativity and hard work as you battle to get your film made by the deadline!”
