‘The Regime’ Trailer: Kate Winslet Is Under Pressure in HBO’s Political Satire

“Mare of Easttown” Emmy winner Kate Winslet is back at HBO — this time as a European authoritarian ruler under heaps of pressure, and crumbling because of it.

HBO has released another trailer for its upcoming series “The Regime,” headed for the premium TV network on March 3, 2024. Oscar nominee Stephen Frears (“The Queen”) and Jessica Hobbs (an Emmy-winning director on “The Crown”) direct the series showrun by Will Tracy.

“The Regime” tells the story of one year within the walls of the palace of a modern European regime as it begins to unravel. Along with Winslet, the cast includes Belgian “Rust and Bone” heartthrob Matthias Schoenaerts, Guillaume Gallienne, surprise 2023 Best Actress Academy Award nominee Andrea Riseborough, Martha Plimpton, and, a usual suspect for this sort of lofty Euro political fare, Hugh Grant. The trailer suggests layers of moneyed darkness a la “Succession” with a dash of Armando Iannucci “Veep” satire to match the drama.

The series used to be called “The Palace,” and it’s executive-produced by Winslet, along with “Succession” producer and scribe Tracy, Frank Rich, Tracey Seaward, Frears, and Hobbs. Seth Reiss, Sarah DeLappe, Jen Spyra, “Super Sad True Love Story” author Gary Shteyngart, and Juli Weiner also serve as writers.

Winslet’s relationship with HBO extends beyond “Mare of Easttown,” the crime drama series that dominated the network water cooler in 2021. She starred also in Todd Haynes’ “Mildred Pierce” adaptation from 2011 and is set to reteam with the “May December” director for the series “Trust,” based on Hernan Diaz’s novel of the same name. That series, if it goes, centers on a wealthy financier who reads a book based on his life who, dissatisfied by his and his wife’s portrayal, asks a secretary to ghostwrite his memoir and set the record straight.

“The Regime,” a limited series, premieres March 3 and will surely be in the Emmys conversation next summer. We just have to get through this year’s Emmys, now set for January, first.
