'Remarkable Coincidence' as Meteor's Trajectory Aligns With Explosion in Puerto Rico

An avid skywatcher in Puerto Rico recorded a “remarkable coincidence” on December 13, as the Geminid meteor shower reached its peak for the year.

Footage by Frankie Lucena, of Cabo Rojo, shows a meteor streaking across the sky, with its trajectory coinciding moments later with an unrelated explosion at ground level.

Storyful has not confirmed the nature of the explosion, but Lucena indicated it was to do with the island’s fragile electricity system, which is still recovering from the devastating impact of hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017, and Hurricane Fiona in 2022.

“This is just a remarkable coincidence. The trajectory of the meteor just happens to coincide with the location of the explosion. The power did go out in my area but for just a minute or so,” Lucena said. Credit: Frankie Lucena via Storyful
