Remembering when Still Game star featured in Aberdeen bus advert

Back in the 1980s, the north-east was thriving, with Aberdeen living large off the recent oil and gas boom and the Dons flying in Europe with Fergie at the helm.

Another thing Aberdonians were treated to were bargain bus fares, with tickets from just 35p taking you right across the city.

To mark the launch of a new service, CityBus featured on our telly screens, with Northern Scottish launching routes running from the city centre to the likes of Kincorth, Northfield, Torry and Bridge of Don.

The advert, which has resurfaced on Facebook, gives viewers today a blast from the past, with the fashions of the eighties well and truly alive and the fares of yesteryear merely shrapnel compared to today's prices.

It's also a trip down memory lane for many, as they catch a glimpse of how the Granite City looked nearly 40 years ago.

Viewers event catch a brief glimpse of 1980s Union Street, packed with the cars of the decade and the never-ending row of shops of the time.

But there is a familiar face we've all come to know and love sitting at the front of the bus ready to take passengers on their way to town.

The actor became best remembered for his role as Joe in Still Game

John Buick, or Joe Douglas from Still Game as we remember him, is parked up and ready to go while advertising the new service.

"It's the fastest, comfiest and friendliest way around town. And I should know, I take the best bus everywhere," says John winking to the camera as he sets off.

From gambling with Tam over his buggy, to trying to lure away a stray cat from Winston, the character of Joe featured in only a handful of episodes in the popular BBC comedy.

And fans can catch a glimpse of him as an Aberdeen bus driver with Facebook page UKADS sharing the old clip on their channel.
