A remorseful former university student has returned a stolen sign after 11 years.

The 3ft long board for Bath University’s Derhill Terrace halls of residence was taken during a drunken night out back in 2004 and returned this week with an anonymous letter of apology.

The note, stuck to the top of the long sign, read: “Thank you for the loan of your sign for the past 11 years.

"I promise I have looked after it well. You will be pleased to hear I have grown up a lot since graduating from Bath.

"I now work in management for a very well known multinational brand and no longer steal signs. Thank you and apologies again. A sorry former sign thief.”

The sign is set to be returned to its rightful place on the wall of the 632 bedroom Westwood accommodation block before the new academic year starts.

University spokesman Andrew Monk said: “Our students take away lots from the University.

"They take impressive qualifications and experiences which prepare them for a variety of top jobs across all sectors, and occasionally, it seems, the odd sign too.

"We’re always delighted to hear from our alumni wherever they are in the world, and of course we’re also very grateful whenever they choose to give back - including when it’s parts of our fixtures and fittings.”
