Moss on the patio can be unsightly, and it can become a slippery nuisance too, compromising not only the aesthetic of your garden but also the safety of the area. If left unchecked, this persistent growth can spread across your patios and paving stones and between cracks, creating a green film that detracts from the clean look of your outdoor space.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, gardening expert Darren Muzzy of Michigan Tree Experts has shared a household item to pair with white vinegar to create a "moss-killing agent" that will result in a "clean, moss-free surface in no time". For this method, Darren noted, householders will need a bucket, warm water, white vinegar, dish soap, and a stiff-bristled broom first and foremost.

He said: "You will use the vinegar and detergent as your moss-killing agents, and the broom for manual removal." Start by removing as much of the moss as you can with the broom. To remove the "more tenacious patches", make sure to use a little elbow grease.

Gardeners will see that the amount of moss cover has "significantly decreased" after this first sweep. But after this manual removal, it is recommended to "use a detergent and vinegar solution to guarantee a longer-lasting solution".

In a bucket, mix warm water with a generous squirt of dish soap. This will form a soapy solution that can "help loosen the moss" from the patio surface.

To effectively remove moss from your patio, follow these simple steps:.

1. Apply a generous amount of dish soap to the affected areas and scrub vigorously with a broom.

Leave the soap on for a few minutes to allow it to work its magic.

2. While the soap is doing its thing, prepare a solution of equal parts water and vinegar.

3. Once the soap has had time to work, rinse the patio thoroughly with the vinegar solution.

As Darren rightly pointed out, "Vinegar is a natural moss killer and will help prevent future growth."

4. Finally, give your patio a final rinse with warm water to remove any soap or vinegar residue.

And there you have it - a moss-free patio that you can enjoy for years to come!
