An abandoned boat has sunk off the coast of Cornwall leaving a mystery surrounding its occupants. The 19-metre boat was seen taking on water off the coast of Lamorna, near Penzance.

RNLI crews from Penlee were called to the sinking boat at 6.30am this morning (Thursday, July 11). Lifeboat crews boarded the boat and found it was abandoned. They were unable to stop the boat from taking on water and then sinking.

Local fishermen then reported that two people in a small dinghy entered the harbour nearby. A short while later, around 7am, a separate crew alongside the Penzance Cliff Rescue Team were sent to search the area.

The crews located a rubber dinghy on the rocks at a nearby location. There was no sign of anyone who may have been on the dinghy, but the engine was warm.

A statement from Penlee RNLI said: "Penlee's all-weather lifeboat collected as much debris as possible from the stricken vessel, including a life raft and flotation rings. Both lifeboats then returned to Newlyn and prepared for their next call-out."
