Rescues Carried Out as at Least 111 Dead, Thousands Displaced by Tropical Cyclone Freddy

At least 111 people have died and thousands have been displaced by Tropical Cyclone Freddy in Malawi, the local branch of UNICEF said on Tuesday, March 14.

Tropical Cyclone Freddy made landfall in Malawi via Nsanje on Sunday, Malawi Weather said.

Storm Freddy is expected to continue to affect Malawi until Wednesday evening.

Classes in ten southern regions have been suspended until at least March 17.

Footage shared by WFP Malawi shows part of a rescue of 25 people in Nsanje district who had become trapped by floodwaters. Local media reported on extensive flooding in Nsanje due to Tropical Cyclone Freddy on Tuesday.

The World Meteorological Organization said it appeared Freddy had set a new record for longevity, having been a named storm for 37 days, but that it was continuing to evaluate the situation. Credit: WFP Malawi via Storyful
