THE most popular names for baby boys and girls in Colchester have been revealed.

The Office for National Statistics has announced the most popular names for boys and girls born in 2022, the most recent data available.

During 2022, there were 1,960 live births throughout Colchester.

Olivia was the most popular girl's name in Colchester with 17 babies given the name in 2022.

The name, of Latin origin, means peace or olive tree.

It held onto the top spot from 2021, when 19 parents chose the name for their baby.

Meanwhile, Arthur, Jude and Theodore were the most common boys' names in the area. In total, 16 babies were given each name in Colchester in 2022.

These names unseated Noah, which was chosen by 22 parents in 2021.

Arthur is believed to be derived from the word artos which means bear.

Jude, of Hebrew descent, means praised but is heavily popularised by The Beatles song Hey Jude.

Theodore, of Greek origin, means a gift from God.

Throughout England and Wales, the top three most used girls' names were Olivia, Amelia and Isla.

The three most popular boys' names in the two countries were Noah, Muhammad and George.

In the two countries, 605,479 live births took place.
