Richard Hammond has opened up about his serious car crash in Switzerland, which happened during filming for The Grand Tour earlier this month.

In an extended interview on Hammond, James May and Jeremy Clarkson's website DriveTribe, Richard and Mate Rimac discuss the crash at length, even dissecting the vehicle's trajectory down the hillside.

Recalling the moment the car lost control, Richard admitted that, of course, he was scared. "I was aware that I was up high, and that inevitably the car was going to come down," he said.

"And yeah, of course there was a moment of dread – 'Oh God, I'm going to die'."

Explaining that he was conscious "the whole way through" the crash and was aware of the car's "beating" from the ground, he said he remembered thinking: "Well, this is it."

"In fact that is what was going through my mind. I thought 'I've had it'," he said. "It was like being in a tumble dryer full of bricks."

Luckily, Richard was spared any life-threatening injuries after losing control of the Rimac Concept One car, but was left with a rather gruesome-looking scar, or a "Swiss Army knee", as he's affectionately coined it.

Proving that he also still has his sense of humour after the accident, Richard showed off his brand new set of wheels earlier this week – including some pretty genius customisation.

But it may be a while before fans get to see Richard back in a four-wheeled vehicle, as Jeremy Clarkson recently confirmed that filming for The Grand Tour's second season has been affected.

"As I write, James May is sitting in the hell hole that is Gatwick Airport waiting for a budget airline to take him to a shoot that Hammond should have been doing," he told fans on DriveTribe.

"Meanwhile, I've been up since dawn, rewriting all of the scripts and ideas we had to accommodate the fact that Hammond can't drive for the next few months."
