Richard Osman has given a long-awaited update on the Netflix adaptation of his hit book, The Thursday Murder Club. It was confirmed this April that the presenter's debut novel, the first of four in the Thursday Murder Club series, would be made into a film.

Since, its star-studded cast has been revealed - and includes David Tennant, Pierce Brosnan and Helen Mirren, with more to be announced. Richard previously teased that the film has the 'greatest British cast assembled since the Harry Potter movies'.

And taking to X, formerly Twitter, on Thursday (June 27), he had another announcement to make. Pointless presenter Richard said: "First day of filming for the Thursday Murder Club film today. Good luck to cast and crew. Photos when I have them!"

Fans congratulated Richard on the exciting new project, as @MPFry3 wrote: "Pumped for you Richard. Best of luck" and @JaneHolmes enthused: "Amazing @richardosman - so excited for this! Good luck and please keep plying us with regular updates!"

Others were quick to point out the irony - that The Thursday Murder Club had begun production on... a Thursday. @crossleyjc quipped: "On a Thursday? I really hope that's only as far a life imitating art goes" as @Stephenheid pointed out: "So it's literally the Thursday murder club".

@KimBarrett8 wrote: "I always imagined the first day of filming on a new project would be on a Monday, but Thursday seems quite appropriate for this one - good luck with it!!"

Others were eager to see Richard himself in the film, as @Gizmo83508413 asked: "You making a cameo @richardosman? Think you should really" and @stuartctaylor echoed: "Have you got a cameo?" It's not known whether Richard will make an appearance in the film, but no doubt fans will have their fingers firmly crossed.

The Thursday Murder Club follows a group of friends in a retirement home who gather to solve murders for fun - but they soon find themselves caught in the middle of a real case. Chris Columbus directs the crime-comedy, which is fronted by Helen Mirren, Pierce Brosnan, Sir Ben Kingsley and Celia Imrie.

Netflix confirmed on Tuesday (June 18) that David Tennant, Daniel Mays, Naomi Ackie, Jonathan Pryce and Henry Lloyd-Hughes would be joining the central cast. Helen is set to play ex-spy Elizabeth, Ben is ex-psychiatrist Ibrahim, Pierce plays former union activist Ron and Celia will be ex-nurse Joyce.

Richard previously said of the adaptation: “I'm so proud of this book, so it is a dream to see The Thursday Murder Club in such incredible hands. From Chris Columbus, to [Steven Spielberg's production company] Amblin to Netflix, there are geniuses everywhere I look. And what a cast. I'm pinching myself.”

A release date for the film is yet to be confirmed. Richard previously said filming would last from late June until September, meaning a 2025 release date is possible.
