Rickers donate $2.5 million to Anderson University

Apr. 16—ANDERSON — A $2.5 million donation from Jay and Nancy Ricker will allow Anderson University to expand offerings in several areas, including student scholarships and the school's cybersecurity program, officials said Tuesday.

The Rickers' donation, announced Monday, will also support other initiatives stemming from the university's new strategic plan.

"We are honored and humbled by Jay and Nancy's generous investment in the life of AU," said President John Pistole. "Their gift will help students lead informed and transformative lives impacting their worlds, just as Jay and Nancy have done in such significant ways."

The Rickers founded Ricker Oil Co. in 1979 in Middletown. After amassing several convenience stores and gas stations, they moved their headquarters to Anderson and at one point, employed nearly 1,000 people throughout the company.

Since selling their company's 57 properties, the Rickers have focused on philanthropy toward several organizations in Madison County.

"As they've said numerous times about other things they support, they grew their business in Anderson, and they're committed to giving back to the community that helped them grow," said Dr. Brent Baker, vice president for advancement at Anderson University. "We're really grateful for their support."

Baker said that, especially among the university's scholarship openings, the Rickers' donation will open untold doors for prospective students.

"It's no secret that a college education is expensive," Baker said. "A gift of this magnitude will help us expose more students to the great education they can get at Anderson University."
