Ricky Gervais has hit out at Boris Johnson and his government in an angry rant over the alleged parties that took place last year while the UK was under lockdown restrictions.

The comedian described those in charge as 'f***ing c****' and accused them of 'acting like Charlie Sheen'.

Gervais' comments come after a photo emerged last week of the Prime Minister in the Downing Street garden with wife Carrie Symonds and 17 staff members in May 2020 when household mixing was limited to one-on-one outdoor meetings.

They were pictured with bottles of wine and a cheeseboard, however, Johnson has since claimed the snap shows "people at work".

In a live streamed video to Twitter, Gervais reflected on not being able to book gigs and how "everything's up in the air" at present given uncertainties around future restrictions being put in place after Christmas before laying into the government.

He stated: "Do you know what's the worst thing as well apart from the pandemic and the devastation and the deaths and the strain on the health service and people losing their livelihoods?

"The worst thing is the f***ing c**** in charge do what they want and all the parties they were having and people saying 'that was the day I couldn't see my mum in hospital' or 'I couldn't go to my dad's funeral' because the people in charge, the posh, privileged people in charge were acting like f***ing Charlie Sheen, really rubbing salt in the wound."

"I don't get political but they are all s***. When are we going to stop 'went to Eton' as a qualification to run the country? I mean f***ing hell," he continued, highlighting the fact that Johnson was educated at private school Eton along with 19 other UK Prime Ministers.

The photograph of the Downing Street garden gathering came just weeks after ITV News released leaked footage of staff laughing about a Christmas party that is said to have taken place in December last year.

Johnson's then press secretary Allegra Stratton was seen answering questions from staff at the mock briefing held a few days later, and remarked there was "definitely no social distancing".

Following public backlash, she later resigned from her post.

Cabinet Secretary Simon Case was set to lead the inquiry into the supposed party, however, he stepped down after accusations were made that his department's office held its own soiree.
