Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Chelsea youngster Rio Ngumoha, with the club continuing to add young talent to their youth teams.

The teenager is expected to leave Chelsea this summer after failing to agree new terms with the club. It is reported that there were concerns about a pathway into the first team at Stamford Bridge, with Liverpool’s track record of giving young players a chance among the reasons they appear to have won the race.

Nhumoha is the latest young recruit to come through the doors at Liverpool. The ECHO reported last month that 16-year-old Alvin Ayman is joining from Wolves, while Trey Nyoni and Amara Nello arrived from Leicester City and West Ham respectively last summer.

Ngumoha seems the be the latest of the young recruits at Anfield. Here is a bit more about the player and Liverpool’s pursuit.

Who is Rio Ngumoha?

He is a 15-year-old left winger, who currently plays for Chelsea. He's found himself training with the Blues' first-team under Mauricio Pochettino on more than one occasion, and despite his young age, made nine appearances for Chelsea's Under 18s last term. He is known to be one of the top talents in his age group and has featured for his national side at U16s level.

Ngumoha has even been compared to Brazilian wonderkid Estevao Willian, who is set to replace him when he joins Chelsea in a big-money move from Palmeiras next summer. The Secret Scout, who specialises in posting scouting videos of young players on X, went so far as to say that: "If Rio was in Brazil and Estevao was in England, there would be a £60m bid pending for Rio."

What is Liverpool’s plan?

The club have tracked the teenager for some time before making the move to bring him in. The plan is for the winger to be blooded into the U18s team in the upcoming season before being assessed for a potential call-up to the U21 squad.

It'll be a careful route to the first-team though, with the winger not celebrating his 16th birthday until later this week. But he'll have eyes on replicating the likes of fellow teenagers Trey Nyoni and Jayden Danns, both of whom made their senior debuts last season.

What is Chelsea’s reaction?

The Daily Mail report that Chelsea are ‘furious’ with the prospect of losing Ngumoha to Liverpool. The Blues will receive a nominal fee from Liverpool for the player.
