Rita Moreno, 92, Serves Drama with Ruffled Gown and Major Hair Change Inspired by Chita Rivera at 2024 Oscars
Ahead of the award ceremony, the star teased that her look would “knock your socks off”
Rita Moreno knows how to make a grand entrance.
Ahead of the Oscars, the 92-year-old actress — who is presenting at the ceremony — teased her look to several outlets, including Today, where she told Hoda Kotb she was “going to wear a gown that’s gonna knock your socks off.” And let's just say, she delivered.
On Sunday, Moreno hit the red carpet in a 3D black Badgley Mischka hourglass gown that definitely brought the "wow" factor with its cascading ruffles.
Opera gloves, which Moreno styled with a gold timepiece, were a must-have accessory to the dramatic design, which also featured a high neckline and mini train.
The "extraordinary" number is a follow-up to her iconic 2022 red-carpet look, which Moreno joked was “not bad for an old lady" when chatting on Today on March 4.
But, that's not all!
The 80 for Brady star also debuted a black shaggy pixie cut! She did, after all, tease a look "very different" from her signature silver hair ahead of the ceremony.
The transformation is only temporary, though. "I'm just having fun wearing this wig," Moreno said on ABC's red carpet preshow.
She added that her all-black Old Hollywood glam is an "homage" to actress Chita Rivera, who she said is a "woman I loved very much."
Moreno did not shine alone — she had her daughter Fernanda Luisa Gordo as her date! Fernanda complemented her mom’s black look in a white gown made with a sheer bejeweled bustier and feather floor-length skirt. She wore her hair in a high bun with face-framing bangs.

The 2024 Oscars are not the first time Moreno has made hair the star of her red carpet ensemble. At the 2022 ceremony, she tucked her gray tresses into a unique boa headpiece.
Along with the feathery accessory, she wore a custom-made, off-the-shoulder black Carolina Herrera gown, which featured a dramatic ruffle bust detail, as well as Verdura earrings and a Roger Vivier bag.

Teasing her role in this year’s ceremony on The View last week, Moreno said, “Oh, it's going to be astonishing … mostly because I'm going to be in it.”
“I'm going to wear a gown that's going to blow a lot of people away,” she told the hosts, adding that the Badgley Mischka gown is “just gorgeous.”
The 96th Oscars will air live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre on Sunday, March 10, at 7 p.m. ET.
