River Lagan Bubble Barrier would be of great "benefit", councillor says

An Alliance councillor has expressed concerns over delays in a new bubble machine coming up the Lagan.
Lisburn and Castlereagh City Council's (LCCC) environment committee is due to return a report on the possibility of obtaining innovative 'Bubble Barrier' technology for the river.
The debris collecting system developed in the Netherlands is promoted as being able to trap and remove plastic as small as 1mm from rivers without hindering boats or fish.

Castlereagh East Alderman, Martin Gregg said: "So, I wrote to council officers about six to eight months ago on the possibility of obtaining a bubble rubbish collector for the Lagan and to investigate how we could do this.
"This new machine would go some way to collect debris from the waterway or perhaps we could even look at a similar contraption.
"The debris could be collected along the river before it would flow in to the Belfast area.
"Now that we are getting closer to the summer time and the council recess, perhaps we could look at the council officers bringing back a report by September.
"There is a significant amount of material that could be caught and removed and would benefit all who live near to and use the Lagan."

A council officer agreed to report back on the issue.
