RNLI goes to the aid of walkers cut off by the tide

Two people who became cut off by the tide in Exmouth were helped to safety by the RNLI yesterday (Wednesday, June 3).

The pair called HM Coastguard after getting stranded near Straight Point, and the coastguard alerted Exmouth lifeboat.

The inshore lifeboat George Bearman II and three volunteer crew launched within 10 minutes, and an RNLI lifeguard on the rescue jetski also headed to the location.

The jetskier was able to help the pair to reach the shoreline themselves without the need for the lifeboat, which stood by as safety cover until they were safe.

An RNLI spokesperson said: "The UK and Ireland have some of the biggest tidal ranges in the world.

"To avoid getting cut off by the tide, make sure it's safe before you head out - check the tide tables - and while you're out, be aware of your surroundings and the tide's direction."
