A building fire caused a road to be blocked this evening as firefighters fought to tackle a blaze.

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service were called to an incident on Lower Lane, Fazakerley and were on the scene at 4.48pm, within four minutes of being alerted.

At the height of the incident, five fire engines and an aerial appliance were on scene and on arrival crews found a single storey commercial property measuring approximately 25m by 30m well alight.

A spokesperson for the fire service added: "Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus began fighting the fire using two main branch hoses. Additional firefighting took place at the rear of the property using a hose reel jet."

Merseyside Police was also on the scene managing an outer cordon and road closures.

At 5.26pm the main body of fire was extinguished and crews began cutting away roof space to check for fire spread. Three fire engines and an aerial appliance remained on scene for some time after with crews using three main branch hoses to hotspot the area.

Road closures were put in place while the incident was dealt with and the road reopened at around 7:40pm. The cause of the fire is not yet known. The ECHO understands the building, which used to be a labour club and was then a bathroom outlet was empty and that no-one was injured in the incident.

One witness at the scene said he had earlier in the day seen workmen 'repairing the roof of the building'. He said he was alerted to the fire after his son ran over screaming "dad, dad, the bathroom place is on fire".

Another said it was "really scary seeing the flames" rising from the building.

Merseyside Police was contacted for comment for more information.
