A thug who threatened a shopworker with a knife and a hammer in an attempted robbery has been jailed. Callum Gibbs, 25, entered an off licence on Wistaston Road, Crewe, carrying the weapons in the early evening of Wednesday, May 8.

Gibbs then demanded £200 from the shopworker who told him there was no money. The defendant then fled the shop after a member of the public entered.

The incident was caught on CCTV with footage also shoring Gibbs shopping two days earlier. He was arrested the following day (May 9), still wearing the same clothing. A search of Gibbs' vehicle uncovered a Stanley knife and a hammer.

Gibbs, of Rope Lane, Wistaston, pleaded guilty to attempted robbery, possession of a knife, and threatening a person with a weapon in a public place. Gibbs appeared at Chester Crown Court on Friday, June 21, where he was sentenced to three years and nine months in prison.

DC Jordan Grimshaw said: “I am grateful for the sentence handed to Gibbs. He decided to put other people in harm’s way to try and get some easy cash.

"But thankfully his efforts were to no avail, and not only did he leave the scene empty handed, but he was arrested less than 24 hours after his dangerous and foolish actions. Thanks to the CCTV evidence against him, he was left with no choice but to admit the offence and is now being held accountable.”
