Robot Wars MUST return after that carnage-filled final

That’s it folks Robot Wars 2016 is over. The six episodes have flown by like a robot getting flipped out of the arena and my hopes of getting another robot fighting fix have been crushed like one of Dead Metal’s victims. But if watching robots tear chunks out of each other has been an addiction, boy did we go out on a high!

Everything that was promised in the build up to the final came to fruition in bucket loads of metal carnage. We saw my pick to win and fan favourite Apollo emerge victorious but sadly without flipping another house robot. We saw Carbide literally causing all manner of havoc with its spinner, breaking the arena wall in one fight and sending a metal plate into the bullet proof glass in front of the audience in another. We saw TR2, masterfully driven by the youngest driver in the competition sadly finish third despite only losing one match in the whole competition.

But when the dust comprising of metal shavings had settled Dara O Briain and Angela Scanlan, who have done superb jobs as the joint hosts of this year’s series, aptly and gleefully adding to the carnage with their playful barbs and pit banter, did not say something like ‘see you next time’ or perhaps more on the nose, ‘there will be a anther series.’

But I’m telling the BBC right now that not only does Robot Wars have to return for another series, so we can see Apollo flip Sir Killalot if nothing else, but it might just be one of the best things they’ll put on our televisions this year. After all it got more viewers than Top gear didn’t it? Has as much drama as Eastenders albeit more robot based and certainly has more twists and turns than Sherlock.

Okay, I know I’m verging on hyperbole a little bit so I’ll reign it in. Robot Wars is a quick and easy programme to watch, it has the best premise imaginable (fighting robots) and is pure light-hearted entertainment shining through the usual sombre intense dramas that are a dime a dozen on our tv schedules. Not to mention the nostalgia value.

Plus I hear that Hypnodisc is up for appearing in the next series so if that’s not a good enough reason to do another one I don’t know what is.
