The singer's wife said he would be missed by so many

Rock 'n' roll star Wee Willie Harris has died at the age of 90.

The singer's wife Sheila said he would be "so, so missed by so many" after he passed away on Thursday (27 April), reported The Sun.

She was quoted as saying that her husband, who is thought to have inspired The Beatles, was "a lovely man".

"He was just such a brilliant man," she said.

"He inspired so many - including Paul McCartney. He was an absolute sensation."

"He could still sing right up until the end and was always a perfect gentleman," she added.

Fans have been paying tribute on Twitter, with one saying that the London-born star was one of the "original wild men of rock 'n' roll".

"RIP to Wee Willie Harris," said another.

"A trendsetter in his day that is for sure."

"We were so sad to hear that our mate Wee Willie Harris has passed away," tweeted the Union Music Store.

"He’d tell us wonderful stories about the birth of British Rock n Roll & his part at the heart of it all…he’d often sing us a tune too…Still had a great voice!

"Hats off to you Willie, so glad to know you."

Another fan said: "A true original, mixing British eccentricity with proper Rock & Roll."

Somebody else said Harris was "a true legend and one-off".

Born Charles William Harris, the star got his start performing at a coffee bar in London.

His nickname stemmed from his 5ft 2 height and he was known for songs including Love Bug Crawl and Rockin' At the 2 I's.
