Roman Kemp says he has 'got his life back' after quitting his role at Capital FM. The 31-year-old brought an end to his decade-long stint of hosting Capital Breakfast earlier this year after saying he needed time for 'himself' after waking up early for seven years to do the early morning show.

Roman was eft breaking down in tears as he hosted his last show on Capital FM on March 28. He announced the news in mid-February while live on Capital with Sian Welby and Chris Stark, saying: "What I can tell you is I’m not saying goodbye right now, I’m not leaving the show today and that’s it, but it’s not far away.

"It will come and that goodbye will come in five to six weeks. It’s not a decision that has come overnight either, it’s massive, I’ve not found it easy at all. Capital is my family, you as the wonderful listeners that you’ve been, you’ve been with me at my best times and my absolute lowest."

Roman joined Capital in 2014 when it was still a London station, before hosting the prestigious The Capital Evening Show in 2016. He moved to Capital Breakfast in 2017 before the show launched nationwide in 2019.

The son of Spandau Ballet star Martin Kemp has since confessed that his choice to depart from the role has resulted in significant improvement in his life.

Speaking to The Sun, he shared: "In a way, you get your life back. I went through a period of spinning too many plates and I think you come to a point where you want to know if your work is controlling you too much.

"My work was controlling my happiness. I had no time to work out what made me happy. I was working constantly."

After leaving his radio stint, Roman felt as if he had entered a fresh realm that he hadn't known existed before. He admits: "It feels like I now have a world I never knew existed. It was so much fun, but you are in your own bubble."

He further admitted: "It has been hard turning down work, but you have to make those decisions to get better and I know I had to for myself."

Roman concluded his departure by deleting a group chat on Whatsapp, which he had started a decade ago. He disclosed: "When I was at Capital, I was in control of the WhatsApp group. The day that I left, I was like, 'I am refusing to be ejected from this group'.

"Instead, at 10.01am, when everyone was going, 'Well done', I secretly deleted the entire group. I blew up the WhatsApp group. I wasn't having it. I opened that group ten years ago . . . I was going to be the one to close it."

Upon announcing his departure, Roman Kemp expressed deep affection for his team at Capital and the parent company Global, referring to them as his "family" and acknowledging their role in his personal growth.

He shared: "Capital is my family, you as the wonderful listeners that you've been, you've been with me at my best times and my absolute lowest ... Capital and Global have helped change me. I was 22 years old when I first joined Capital and it's built me into the man that I am today, it is all that I know."

Roman will return to the beloved Channel 4 series Celebrity Gogglebox tonight (Friday, June 14) alongside his dad Martin Kemp. The original version of the show returned earlier this year in February for its 22nd series. Now our favourite celebrity duos are back, giving their views on the best TV shows, films and news.
