Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce from his wife Erica Stoll, with court documents revealing the split just a day after his PGA Tour victory. The couple, who have been married for seven years and share a daughter, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy, aged 3, are seeking an amicable separation.

The Northern Irish golf sensation started seeing Stoll in 2014 and wed in 2017, and they've both been Florida residents for over five years. The divorce petition was lodged at Palm Beach County State Court in Florida on Monday, with McIlroy's team issuing a statement confirming the filing and his wish for a respectful process.

"Rory McIlroy's communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed," the statement from the 35 year old's representatives said. "They stressed Rory's desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment."

Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll's relationship history after missed tee time saw love blossom, reports the Irish Star.

The Irish Star has spotlighted four crucial aspects from Rory McIlroy's divorce filings, noting the timing of the submission immediately following his victory at the Wells Fargo Championship. Despite facing personal hurdles, McIlroy put on an impressive display to clinch his fourth title at the event by surpassing Xander Schauffele.

"I really got some confidence winning in New Orleans with Shane," McIlroy reflected. "Coming into this week, at a golf course I am comfortable with, my golf swing feels more comfortable than it has done. Going to a venue next week where I have won, it feels like the stars are aligning a little bit. But I have a lot of golf to play and a lot of great players to try to beat. I am going into the next major of the year feeling really good about myself," the Mirror reports.

With the PGA Championship at Valhalla, Kentucky, just around the corner, McIlroy's separation has been made public only two days before the event. Following his recent upturn in form, he is considered one of the frontrunners for the Wannamaker Trophy.

The legal papers describe McIlroy and Stoll's marriage as "irretrievably broken", which stands out as a primary cause for the dissolution of their union. The couple exchanged vows on April 21, 2017, in Ireland.

Rory McIlroy and Erica Stoll had agreed upon their prenuptial arrangement on March 17, 2017. The legal submission is adamant that "the court should determine that the Prenuptial agreement is valid and enforceable", urging both parties to comply with its stipulations.

While the details of the prenup are kept under wraps, it's clear that adherence to its provisions is anticipated from both McIlroy and Stoll. The filings also make a case for joint parenting.

The documents set forth a clear plan for Rory and Erica to co-parent their daughter, Poppy, effectively. They propose shared custody and the establishment of a timesharing schedule for Poppy.

As Rory McIlroy gears up for the PGA Championship, he breaks his silence on his divorce from Erica Stoll.

Furthermore, the filing maintains that both parents "have the ability" to financially support Poppy, suggesting that child support be determined "in accordance with the Florida Child Support Guidelines", which includes providing health insurance for Poppy.
