Hundreds of unwanted household items, destined for landfill, have been freely distributed by the Watford Rotary Club.

In what was marked as important date in Watford Rotary’s calendar after months of collections, club members handed out pictures, crockery, computer printers, record players, CDs and DVDs, among other items.

These items, though functional, would likely have ended up in landfills if not recycled.

Ann Grierson, from Watford Rotary and event organiser, said: "It was amazing to see the expressions on people's faces when we told them they could have it free, we even had recycled plastic bags for them to put it in.

"We are seriously considering making this a regular event rather than just once a year, our biggest problem is trying to find a storage unit to hold the items collected, if any reader of the Watford Observer can help, it will enable us to make this the regular event we want to see."

The initiative was supported by Friends of the Earth, Watford Borough Council and Three Rivers Council, whose cooperation and assistance played a significant role in its success.

Rotarians believe it's better to recycle than bin, a value that resonates in a time of growing ecological concern.
