Royle Family stars Ricky Tomlinson and Sue Johnston say there won't be any reunion episode

The Royle Family is one of the most beloved British sitcoms ever, so much so that it kept coming back for special episodes for over a decade after its original run ended.

Actors Ricky Tomlinson and Sue Johnston appeared on Thursday's (July 2) Loose Women to talk about co-star Caroline Aherne, who passed away four years ago today.

When asked if there would be another reunion episode, possibly to pay tribute to Aherne, the pair said that they wouldn't do one – although there was a tease that they may work together on something soon.

"Not for me, kid. Not for me," Tomlinson said. "If it's not broke, don't try and fix it. She was wonderful. How many people my age love going to work, can't wait to go to work and have a laugh? That's what it was like. It was wonderful."

He added: "There is a rumour that me and Sue could end up in an old-age pensioners' home, and a little sitcom built around that – where are they now? I think that would be quite good."

The two also talked about how the much-missed actress had "extraordinary generosity" and would always provide beers and champagne for the cast and crew at the end of a week of filming.

However, they went on to note that was she was such a prankster they couldn't tell many stories about her on daytime TV without getting in trouble.

Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
