Ryan Reynolds has played a hilarious birthday prank on his friend and Wrexham co-owner Rob McElhenney just hours after their team secured back-to-back promotions and a place in League One next season. Wrexham confirmed their promotion with a thumping 6-0 win over Forest Green Rovers at the Racecourse on Saturday afternoon. It capped another terrific season for the club which has gone from strength to strength since being taken over by Hollywood stars Reynolds and McElhenney in 2021.

Posting a video on X in the early hours of Sunday morning, Reynolds paid tribute to McElhenney with a funny video which parodied a famous scene from hit movie Titanic. Dressed in his iconic Deadpool outfit, Reynolds said: “Today is April 14, the birthday of my beloved co-chairman Mr Rob McElhenney. It also happens to be the day the Titanic went down.”

Reynolds then jokes that he financed an expedition to the ocean floor in an attempt to recover some Wrexham Lager - which was actually served on-board the Titanic during its maiden voyage. He said the mission failed, but joked that instead they were able to find an image of a posing McElhenney wearing a heart necklace, reminiscent of that worn by the character of Rose in the 1997 film directed by James Cameron. Reynolds added: “Please, don’t embarrass him (McElhenney) by going to vistaprint.com/wrexham to purchase a gift and share items customised in all of Rob’s splendour and soft, delicate chest hair. And don’t put it all over social media, nor should you visit the Ty Pawb gallery in Wrexham, where this picture will actually hang among genuine works of art. Wrexham will play next season in the third tier of English football for the first time since the 2004-05 season. After narrowly missing out on promotion back into the football league two seasons ago, the club will now hope to have a real go at making a push for the Championship, which could mean Welsh derbies against Cardiff and Swansea.

They secured promotion on Saturday thanks to two goals from Paul Mullin, and goals from Elliott Lee, Ryan Barnett and Jack Marriott, while Ryan Inniss scored an own goal for Forest Green Rovers. Defender Eoghan O'Connell has described promotion as an "incredible achievement." He said: "These things never really sink until the next couple of days, or even weeks. Winning is tough, and to do it back to back is an incredible achievement for the team and the club.

"When you move in football, you get a feel for if you're at the right club within days, and within a couple of days of signing here I knew I had made a good decision. It's been incredible, I've loved every minute of it, and we're only just getting started on this journey."
