If results are kind to Wrexham this weekend, Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney could find themselves with a perfect Hollywood ending to the season.

If MK Dons and Barrow fail to win their matches on Saturday, then Wrexham will take back-to-back promotions and move up to League One. You can read more about the permutations here. The monumental rise under their A-list owners has been impressive, but can they sustain it and what is the ceiling for Wrexham AFC?

The dynamic duo are certainly rich - they both have business interests outside of acting and the north Wales club - but exactly how wealthy are they? Here we pull back the curtain on how much the pair have pumped in and their contribution to the community as a whole.

The money side

Reynolds and McElhenney bought the club for around £2million in November 2020, and finalised their takeover in February 2021. The Always Sunny in Philadephia star explained that the English football pyramid drew him in, because he realised it would be possible for the club to progress.

As millionaires, the duo were quickly able to assemble Wrexham the most expensive squad in the National League and they have the most expensive squad in League Two this year, as well. It is currently valued at around £7.85million.

Reynolds has a net worth of around £280million, which is partly down to his incredible success in films like Deadpool, The Proposal and Free Guy. He also started his own production company in 2018 and owns roughly a 25 per cent stake in Mint Mobile and Aviation American Gin.

McElhenney is less wealthy than his Wrexham partner but is still by no means strapped for cash, with a net worth of around £50million. Along with the club, he also owns a tech company called Adim and a bar in Philadelphia named after his Always Sunny character.

Together, this gives them a rough net worth of £330million, which would place them 13th in the Championship, in terms of owner wealth, as of June 2023.

Perhaps, then, the second tier of English football is their ceiling, but Wrexham could find themselves in the Championship if Reynolds and McElhenney continue to invest in the club. Luckily for Dragons fans, the pair seem incredibly invested in the community.

A deep connection to club and community

Both men have spoken about the appeal of the “underdog story” when they first arrived at the club and about being struck by the importance of the Reds to the community.

Throughout their time here, they have tried to ingratiate themselves and help people in Wrexham when they could.

For example, when disabled Dragons fan Aiden Stott appealed for "friends and strangers" to help him get a new bath and mechanical hoist, he probably wasn't expecting one of his club's new owners, fresh from signing the takeover papers, to get him over the line.

Just one day after Mr Stott, who has cerebral palsy, launched the campaign, McElhenney, who had only taken over the club two days prior, ensured that he would get his new bathroom by donating the full target amount of £6,000. You can read more about that here.

They also kitted out a local youth team; Kayleigh Burton launched a GoFundMe to raise cash for her son’s Futsal team, FC United of Wrexham U12s, to get their own kit. After suffering the tragic loss of her son's father, they had faced a tough year.

Step forward Reynolds, who donated £1,600 to the cause, and Kayleigh was left speechless.

She said: “I’m lost for words, and over the moon. Thank you Ryan for putting a smile on the team’s face, if thank you is even enough. Keegen is Wrexham’s number one fan. His dad would be made up for him and bursting with pride.”

The duo also donated £5,000 in memory of a Halifax Town fan who died from terminal bowel cancer in August 2022. Noah Brown was 19 when he tragically passed away. “We are raising money and awareness to help other teenagers and their families through the darkest time of their lives,” mum Julie Brown wrote online.

The family later received a £5,000 donation from “Ryan and Rob and Wrexham”, which was to be given to the Teenage Cancer Trust.

The movie stars also supported Wrexham player Jordan Davies and his partner Kelsey Edwards when they lost their baby boy Arthur, when he was born stillborn in December 2021.

Kelsey launched a GoFundMe, saying: “Our baby boy, Arthur Andrew Davies was born sleeping on the 14th December 2021. The support we’ve received during this time has been amazing.”

The initial target for charity Sands UK was £1,500; Reynolds and McElhenney, together with their partners Blake Lively and Kaitlin Olson, surpassed the target by donating £10,000. You can read more about that here.

All of the above suggests the star-studded duo are not just invested in Wrexham Football Club - but Wrexham and the wider community itself.

However far they go, as they continue their rise through the football pyramid, one thing is for certain - it will be box office, because, well, so are they. And with it hearts of gold.
