What did you miss?

Ryan Thomas said his Coronation Street mum Sue Cleaver was "a mother both on and off set" as they were reunited on TV.

The actors were co-stars on the cobbles from 2000, with Cleaver playing Eileen Grimshaw and Thomas starring as her son Jason. Cleaver is still in the ITV soap but Thomas waved goodbye to Weatherfield in 2016.

However, the pair came back together when Thomas was a guest on ITV’s Loose Women on Wednesday, 21 February.

What, how, and why?

“This is my childhood,” he said after hugging Cleaver. “And this was my first ever job at 16 years old. I remember it like yesterday, Christmas Day, it went out. I remember saying, ‘Is my mum in?’ and the rest is history, 16 years later. Crazy.”

Laughing, Thomas, 39, said Cleaver told him off “many times”. “I do remember him coming in and he was always gorgeous,” she teased. “But yeah, he did get up to things and we had to have little words about etiquette in studio and how we behave ourselves!”

Thomas replied: “When you are a young boy at that age you need a role model. You need somebody to direct you and give you the reassurance that you are doing things correctly and I couldn’t have asked for anyone more perfect, she was a mother both on and off set.”

Ryan Thomas also talked about Dancing On Ice

The star also opened up about taking part in Dancing On Ice, admitting it can be difficult. “I said to my agent, ‘What did I sign up for?’” he confessed. “I find it really really tough, mentally, physically, so much work goes into it behind the scenes up until the live show."

“As you can see I’ve fallen and gotten back up," he said, saying the show was "a journey".

The actor said he wanted the ground to “swallow me up” when he took a tumble but that “you get up”.

“And I got to perform to my dad’s song,” he said, referring to skating to his late father Douglas’s cover of the song Easy by The Commodores. The star, who lost his dad in 2020, said it was a "real honour".

“At the time you didn’t get think about it while you were doing your training, it was only when it finished that I actually realised how important it was," he added.

Cleaver joked about Thomas doing Dancing On Ice, saying it means getting up early and that she was amazed as the actor isn't much of a morning person. "First thing in the morning he is vile," she laughed. "You would not believe it, it’s like Jekyll and Hyde."
