Sadness as former Cleethorpes' Jungle Zoo site targeted in arson attack

A huge fire which tore apart the premises of the former Jungle Zoo in Cleethorpes has been labelled as arson.

Shortly after 11pm on Thursday night, crews from Humberside Fire and Rescue were called to the derelict building, which closed to the public as an attraction in late 2022, following reports of a fire at the site.

Four fire engines attended the scene and crews were on site until 12.45am extinguishing the blaze. Police and fire investigation officers were also at the scene throughout Friday morning to determine the exact cause of the fire.

A scene guard and cordon was put in place around the back of the building, with people advised to stay away from the area.

Pictures taken following the aftermath of the blaze show the building having sustained extensive fire damage throughout.

Humberside Police has confirmed it is investigating the incident to determine the exact cause of the fire, and is urging anyone with information to contact them.

A spokesperson for the force said: Emergency services were called to a fire at a premise on Kings Road, Cleethorpes shortly after 11pm yesterday evening, Thursday 4 July. Thankfully nobody is believed to have been injured as a result of this incident.

"Investigations are now underway to establish the cause of the fire and anyone with information, that has not already spoken to us is asked to call our non-emergency 101 line quoting log 629 of 4 July or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

A spokesperson for Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received a call after 11pm to a fire in a derelict building on Kings Road in Cleethorpes. We sent four fire engines and crews were on scene until 12.45am. Our firefighters arrived to a well established building fire. The incident has been labelled deliberate and we advise people to stay away from the area."
