A new Sainsbury’s store is to open on the edge of a major Leicestershire housing development. The 'top up' shop is set to create 20 jobs, according to the planning application.

The Sainsbury’s Local will be on land in Welsted Road, Castle Donington, and forms part of the major Stud Brook Business Park scheme which sits opposite hundreds of new homes being built in the area. The land had originally been touted to become a pub, but applicant Clowes Developments said the change would still provide residents with something for the community to use.

The decision is the second in a number of days for the Welsted Road area after Clowes’ plan for a drive-thru Starbucks was given the go ahead. That plan will create nine full-time jobs and 12 full-time positions, according to planning documents.

The developer said the new shop would have 25 parking spaces. Clowes Developments claimed there was no other “suitable or viable” location for the store, which will be close to East Midlands Airport. It added that Welsted Road was a “sustainable” location for the proposal - something officials on North West Leicestershire District Council (NWLDC) agreed with.

NWLDC put a number of conditions on the plan, including opening hours of 7am to 11pm daily to meet the “interests of living conditions” for residents and building work being restricted to 7am and 7pm Mondays to Saturdays, with no construction allowed on Sundays or bank holidays.
