Shoppers told 'do not eat' as £1.20 item sold in Sainsbury's and Ocado recalled

A "tropical" item from a company whose products are sold in Sainsbury's and Ocado has been recalled. Wanis is recalling Tropical Sun Semolina Fine because it contains wheat (gluten) which is not mentioned on the label.

This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with coeliac disease, and/or an allergy or intolerance to wheat or gluten. Sainsbury's and Ocado sell the fine semolina bags in almost all their stores but the recall doesn't impact the supermarkets.

Wanis is recalling the above product from customers and has contacted the relevant allergy support organisations, which will tell their members about the recall. The company has also issued a recall notice to its customers.

A product description explains: "Semolina is popular right across the globe in regions including Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe. Delivering a fine, smooth texture that can be used to prepare sweet or savoury dishes, it offers a wonderfully convenient way to tropicalise your food. Perfect for making dumplings to go with soups or stews, it also works well as a replacement for rice or potatoes and in desserts such as semolina pudding."

The products impacted include Tropical Sun Semolina Fine in 1.5kg and 5kg. 500g of Semolina Coarse, sold in Ocado, have also been pulled, as well as in 5kg and 1.5kg pack sizes. A 500g bag costs just £1.20 from Sainsbury's.
