Will Sam finish writing GoT before George RR Martin?

Game of Thrones fans love to theorise, mainly because one of the best things about the show is the fact there's tons to discuss.

One of the most popular fan theories (Samwell Tarly ends up writing the George RR Martin books that were adapted into the show) seemed to be confirmed in a fairly major way during season 7's second episode 'Stormborn'.

As Sam was being led around the library by Jim Broadbent's character, it was revealed that the Archmaester is currently writing A Chronicle of the Wars Following the Death of King Robert the First. Which, clearly, will cover all the events we've been watching on the show.

Sam points out that he could do with a 'more poetic' title, which the Archmaester dismisses.

But, as we all know, it does indeed get a more poetic title – A Song of Ice And Fire – so either Sam convinces him to change it, or Sam takes over and chooses the title himself, and a massive fan theory is confirmed.

If that happens, it has another implication – with George RR Martin's books so far behind the series, it's almost certain that Samwell will start writing his version on the show (our prediction – the whole series ends with a shot of Sam putting quill to ink, and beginning to write) before George finishes his.

So will Sam get to Winds of Winter and the final book, A Dream of Spring, before George does? At the current rate, probably.

Of course, this being Game of Thrones, there are plenty of other theories about Sam – including the possibility that he's Azor Ahai (a prophecy which gained a different dimension after 'Stormborn'). We'll have to wait and see whether that one's confirmed any time soon.
