Samsung Galaxy Sport smartwatch leak reveals dramatic departure from Gear series

The imminent arrival of two high-end Samsung Galaxy smartphones means many tech enthusiasts may have overlooked another Samsung Galaxy device on the horizon.

Samsung announced its Unpacked 2019 event for 20 February, which is expected to herald the arrival of its flagship Galaxy S10 smartphone and potentially a foldable phone called the Galaxy X or Galaxy F.

The arrival of a new premium Galaxy smartphone in recent years has typically come along with a new smartwatch, with various iterations of the Gear watch being released since 2013.

In 2019, the new wearable will reportedly be named the Galaxy Sport, according to 91Mobiles, who posted renders of the device based on leaked information of the specs.

The images show a smartwatch with a circular screen that foregoes the rotating bezel that has featured on recent versions of Samsung's smartwatches.

The bezel has previously allowed wearers of the watch to scroll between different apps on the device.

In order to navigate between apps on the smartwatch, the leaks suggest there will now be two circular buttons on the side of the device.

The renders don't give any idea about what the rear of the Samsung Galaxy watch will look like, though it would be safe to assume that many of the same sensors that appeared on previous versions will also feature.

These include a heart rate monitor, step counter, sleep and activity tracker and GPS tracking – together with NFC capabilities to make payments.

According to the publication, the Galaxy Sport smartwatch will also be the first to feature Bixby Reminders, based on Samsung's smart voice assistant.

Much like the latest Apple Watch, the Samsung Galaxy Watch will also come with a virtual sim card inside, meaning it doesn't need to connect to a nearby smartphone in order to make phone calls.
