Saskatoon man charged with carjacking Uber driver at knifepoint

A Saskatoon man has been charged with robbery and dangerous driving after an Uber driver was carjacked at knifepoint on Saturday.

The suspect, who appeared Monday morning in Saskatoon provincial court, will remain in custody until his bail hearing on Wednesday.

When asked whether he understood the charges, he replied, "Yes, and I plead the 5th and not guilty." The man then asked that he not be judged by his face tattoos.

The Saskatoon police air support unit posted a video of the suspect's arrest.

"On Saturday night an Uber driver was carjacked at knifepoint," the post said. "The suspect fled north out of the city. With help from [RCMP and SPS canine] and some stop sticks, the suspect was safely arrested near Duck Lake."

The video shows the rear wheel of the van flying off after it goes across the stop stick. The suspect is then seen running away from the van as it rolls to a stop.

There is no word whether the Uber driver was injured.

In a news release, police said the 20-year-old suspect took the rideshare around 10 p.m. near the 10 Block of 24th Street East.
