Satellite Imagery Captures Icelandic Lava Flow

Imagery from polar-orbiting satellites shows the lava flow from the Grindavik eruption in Iceland on January 14.

Visualizations from CIRA/CSU & NOAA show the lava flow starting on Sunday morning.

Icelandic broadcaster RUV said by Monday it appeared volcanic activity was decreasing, but there was “great uncertainty about the future.”

On Wednesday RUV reported that electricity and hot water had mostly been returned to Grindavik after lava destroyed at least three houses in the village.

No one was injured, Iceland’s president said. Credit: CIRA/CSU & NOAA via Storyful
