Satellite Imagery Shows New Iceberg Larger Than Las Vegas Breaking Off Ice Shelf

A new iceberg, named A-83, broke off from the Brunt Ice Shelf in Antarctica over the course of several days in late May.

Satellite imagery shows the new iceberg, which is estimated to be bigger than the city of Las Vegas, according to the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere, calving from the 150m thick ice shelf.

According to the British Antarctic Survey, the large iceberg broke off after a large crack appeared a few weeks ago. Credit: CSU/CIRA & NOAA/NESDIS via Storyful
