I saw Taylor Swift’s final Liverpool show and I’ll never feel bad, dumb or stupid again

It’s fair to say I’m not your typical Swiftie. Some would say I’m a little long in the tooth to be wearing cowboy boots and a Red Era-inspired dress but, to quote Taylor, “the worst kind of person is someone who makes someone feel bad, dumb or stupid for being excited about something”.

And I am excited to be at Anfield making memories with my own Swiftie. Taylor has been the constant background track to her childhood and adolescence, each era charting my daughter’s journey from little girl to young woman.

And the surprise releases of Folklore and Evermore helped us bond during those testing lockdown months providing some much-needed light in such dark days. Liverpool loves Taylor and she is loving us right back.

Just moments into her last show at Anfield, Taylor told the crowd: "Liverpool just look at you. I've got to be honest, you're making me feel absolutely fantastic right now."

The singer receiving massive cheers from the audience as she pointed to each section of the Anfield crowd and admitted: "That was really cool. That went immediately to my head. You guys just made me feel really, really powerful. I get to play a sold out show in Liverpool on a Saturday night."

She added: "So first of all I want to say thank you for every single choice you've made that has ended you here. It is going to be the number one goal of everyone on this stage to make you proud of those decisions to spend time with us on a Saturday night."

Despite breaking Anfield attendance records and the 62,000-strong crowd, the Eras show, at times, feels surprisingly intimate as Taylor connects effortlessly with her adoring fans. This is especially true during her acoustic surprise songs set and tonight Liverpool was in for a real treat.

One of the most anticipated parts of the Eras Tour show is always which surprise songs Taylor will perform. Tonight on the third and final night in Liverpool she sang a "murder mashup" of Carolina from Where The Crawdads Sing soundtrack and no body, no crime.

Taking to the piano, Taylor then performed her second surprise song of the night The Manuscript which is the first time she has ever played TTPD song live. She performed it in a medley with Red - in a nod to Liverpool FC.

While some of Taylor’s most famous songs and eras such as ‘Shake it Off’ from 1989 and Red’s ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’ inspire the loudest singalongs, tracks from the recently released Tortured Poets Department are an unexpected highlight among a catalogue of classics. Taylor seemingly levitates across the stage, behind her a darkening sky and a zombie-like image of her face projected onto the giant screen, during a rousing performance of ‘Who’s afraid of little old me?’.

‘I Can Do It With A Broken Heart’ sees the singer interact playfully with her backing dancers including the enigmatic Kam Saunders who won the hearts of the Anfield crowd on Friday with his brave attempt at a Scouse accent. From beautifully-staged tracks from Folklore and Evermore, as a resplendent Taylor performs in a grass-roofed cottage, to the empowering Reputation era, a spine-tingly 10-minute version of ‘All Too Well’, the quite-brilliant Karma and everything before and in between this is some slick show.

For me, it is probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience and a valuable lesson in being true to yourself. Cardiff and London - get ready for the trip of your life. Read our reviews of Thursday and Friday’s Anfield shows.

The UK leg of the Eras Tour continues at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on June 18 and at Wembley Stadium from June 21-23 and August 15-20.
