Apple TV+ musical series Schmigadoon! has been cancelled after just two seasons, despite a third already being written.

The show debuted back in 2021, and follows a couple who get trapped in a series of musical theatre settings.

Each of the first two seasons has taken on different musical eras, with the first paying homage to the Golden Age in the 40s and 50s, while the second explores the grittier time of the 60s and 70s.

However, co-creator Cinco Paul has revealed on social media that Apple has decided not to renew the show for a third outing, as he thanked all those involved and the show's fans.

"I am sad to share that Apple will not be moving forward with season 3 of Schmigadoon!," he began in a statement. "The season is written (including 25 new songs), but we unfortunately won't be making it. Such is life.

"I want to thank everyone involved with the show, our incredible cast & crew & writers, our wonderful supporters at Broadway Video, Universal & Apple, for everything they did to make it happen. It's a miracle we even got two seasons, honestly, and I'm so grateful we did."

Paul continued: "To all the fans of the show out there – thank you with all of my heart. Your love and support has meant so much, and the fact that you connected with our show, that it brought some joy, means the world to me.

"This was tough news to get, but the optimist in me is convinced it's not the end of Schmigadoon… and maybe it's even a happy beginning. Love, Cinco."

Schmigadoon! aired its now-final season last year, and was set in the fictional city of Schmicago – a play on the hit musical Chicago.

The show starred The Super Mario Bros Movie's Keegan-Michael Key and Leo's Cecily Strong, and also featured appearances from Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose, The Good Wife's Alan Cumming, Only Murders in the Building's Martin Short and 30 Rock's Jane Krakowski.

Schmigadoon! seasons 1-2 are streaming on Apple TV+ now.
