Schoolgirl's devastating diagnosis after fall in playground

A little girl with incurable cancer has one wish ahead of Taylor Swift's concerts at Anfield Stadium.

Ava Davidson's family first knew something was wrong when she was eight-years-old. The schoolgirl, from Fazakerley, was playing on a balance board with her friend at school when she fell off and broke her thigh bone.

Her parents initially thought the accident had caused Ava to break a bone, however doctors at Alder Hey Children's Hospital raised concerns about the severity of the injury and referred her for further tests.

Ava was transferred from Alder Hey to The Great North Children's Hospital in Newcastle where she was told she had a rare type of bone cancer called Ewing sarcoma. Doctors said the cancer had likely weakened Ava's bone and contributed to the severity of her injury.

Speaking to the ECHO, Ava's sister Ella Davidson said: "It's a really rare cancer. We were told it was more common in teenage boys. Ava was eight at the time."

Ava underwent chemotherapy at Alder Hey but in a devastating turn of events, the break ruptured a tumour in Ava’s leg, meaning the only hope of a cure was for her leg to be amputated. Despite her ordeal, Ava, now aged 12, learned to adapt to life with a prosthetic leg.

Ella, 22, added: "She's always singing and dancing. Av has a gorgeous little voice. She had a dance show in school where she did a solo and she had everyone in tears. She learnt to it all again in with one leg. She is just amazing."

In September 2020, Ava was given the all clear and rang the bell. However, the family were given devastating news last year that a tumour was found in her clivus bone - which is at the base of the skull, near the spine.

She went through more treatment for this, but Ava started to suffer with severe back pain a few months later.

Ella said: "They found a massive tumour in her spine. She had to have urgent radiotherapy as it was on her spinal cord and she could have ended up paralysed. She then had her scan which she was due and it found metastasis in her lungs."

Three years after her first diagnosis, doctors told the 12-year-old and her family the cancer was now incurable. Ava who has a "gorgeous voice" and always performing and dancing will be seeing Taylor Swift at Anfield on Saturday, June 15.

The huge fan's favourite song is Lover, which she sings throughout her radiotherapy sessions as her family aren't allowed to be with her when she receives this treatment. The Swiftie even decorated her radiotherapy mask Eras themed - the name of the concert tour which is a celebration of every Taylor era that we have lived through.

Ava hopes to be one of lucky fans who receives the hand delivered black hat off Taylor while she performs 22 in the Red era of the tour. Sister Ella has made a TikTok sharing Ava's story in the hopes Taylor Swift and those at Anfield see it.
