The task for Steve Clarke and his Scotland players is pretty simple now going into their final Euro 2024 Group A game in Stuttgart on Sunday.

If they can get a first major tournament victory for 28 years against Hungary, winless so far in their opening two games against Switzerland and Germany, then it will be a place in the knockout stage for the first time in their history. Lose or draw against the Magyars in the MHPArena and it will be an exit from the tournament for Clarke’s men.

From the outset, Clarke was targeting the four-point tally that would see them progress to the last 16. Scott McTominay’s goal against Switzerland in Cologne which earned Scotland a draw means they are still very much in with a chance of achieving that. There is still plenty of work to do but it’s achievable. For the thousands of Tartan Army foot soldiers on the march in Germany, it means the chance of their adventure continuing. But who and where could they be heading next? Here, Record Sport looks at the most likely scenarios.

Winner Group B - Sunday June 30, Cologne, kick off 8pm

Having enjoyed a night to remember in Cologne against Switzerland, a journey back there would probably appeal to the Scotland fans who had such a spectacular time in the city centre - and then in the stadium itself. What is a bit more daunting is what would face Scotland on the park. Defending champions Italy and three-time title holders Spain will almost certainly come out on top in Group B, with the two heavyweights going head to head in Gelsenkirchen in the second group game. It’s worth noting that in the extremely unlikely event of Scotland finishing second in Group A then they would play the runners-up in this group so it would still mean taking on either Spain or Italy but that would be played 24 hours earlier, on June 29, in Berlin.

Winner Group E - Tuesday, July 2, Munich, kick off 5pm

Obviously facing Spain or Italy would be a real tough task but IF Scotland can get that win against Hungary then the other two likely scenarios aren’t so tough. The second possibility is the winners of Group E. Romania are currently top after their impressive 3-0 win over Ukraine while Slovakia also have three points after their shock victory over Belgium.

Playing either Romania or Slovakia would likely be a challenge Clarke would fancy, although Belgium would be a bit tougher, on paper at least, if they can recover from that set-back. This scenario would see the Tartan Army returning to where it all started and the Allianz Arena and at least would allow more chances for fans to grab a ticket with 66,000 seats.

Winner Group F - Monday, July 1, Frankfurt, kick off 8pm

Turkey currently lead the way here after their thrilling win over Georgia and Arda Guler - nicknamed the ‘Turkish Messi’ - would be some handful. They are battling it out with Portugal to take top spot and Roberto Martinez’s men are seen as the best squad outside of the real big guns and dark horses to go all the way, as they did in Euro 2016. This would at least give Scotland fans the chance to tick off a city they haven’t been to in the tournament.
