Scotland issued 16 flood alerts across country on second day of 'disruptive' downpours

Several Scots areas have been issued with flood alerts from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) as persistent rain continues to fall.

Earlier this week the Met Office issued a string of heavy rain warnings for Scotland and the rest of the UK, warning that the adverse conditions could lead to some travel difficulties and power cuts.

Covering much of central, western and eastern coasts of Scotland, the weather warnings are due to come to a close by 3am on Friday May 24. Until then, Scots are being urged to know where the flood warnings have been placed in order to stay safe. It comes as one girl in Yorkshire tragically died as a result of a mudslide yesterday, May 22.

Scotland's only flood warning is in Nairn Side, Cawdor this morning, meaning that flooding is 'imminent' and immediate action is required to protect yourself and your property.

Meanwhile, a flood alert is an early indication of potential flooding from rivers, sea and surface water, and there are currently 16 in place across Scotland, from central Scotland to Dumfries and Edinburgh. SEPA's live flood forecast allows people to see exactly where is at risk of flooding so that they can take the right precautions.

The experts warned that flooding from surface water and rivers is possible across most of the country due to this period of heavy rain, with disruption to infrastructure also possible - especially in the east, central belt and south.

This rain is due to turn more showery today compared to yesterday, but at the same time, some heavy, slow-moving downpours may develop across parts of southern and eastern Scotland.

The Met Office noted that 20-40 mm may accumulate quite widely through this period, but in excess of 60 mm is quite possible over some northern and eastern facing high ground.

After the Met Office weather alerts come to an end this evening, Friday May 24 could end up being a calmer picture - although some rain is still expected here in Scotland.

And on Saturday, the west of Scotland is likely to see the worst of the rain thanks to a weather front pushing in from the Atlantic. Elsewhere though, it's likely to be a 'fair' day with temperatures above average.
