Scott Brown addresses Celtic manager ambition as Ayr United boss dismisses 'right' to job

Scott Brown has addressed his future ambitions to manage Celtic - and insisted his reputation as a club icon won't come into it.

The Hoops hero played at the club for 14 years and won every domestic trophy available in that space of time. Now that Brown is in management - currently at Ayr United having started out at Fleetwood Town - the natural feeling would be that, one day, the 38-year-old would make the step up to work as main man at Parkhead.

But while Brown would certainly be open to the conversation down the line, the retired midfielder admits there would be no divine right for him to walk into the job based on his previous stint and he would have to prove himself worthy of the gig before it could realistically happen.

He told BBC's Scottish Football pod: “Everyone says that! I think for me, I need to just worry about myself. At Celtic what I have done and how I’ve played that’s all in the past. You don’t become the manager because you just played at Celtic. You’ve not got the right to manage Celtic. You have to go and earn it. And you have to be qualified because you’ve taken good quality players that have a right good IQ about the game and understand that and you need to make sure you can make them better.

“And you have to also have that passion to the fans. Yeah, I have got that understanding about what they want and how the club works but you have to drive them.”
