Sea Lion Charges Toward People on San Diego Beach

A defensive sea lion appearing to protect its pups charged toward beachgoers in San Diego, California, on June 23.

Video recorded by Lauren Bertrand shows a large sea lion and two pups swimming by the rocks of La Jolla Cove. Bertrand told Storyful the sea lion approached the beachgoers before eventually charging at people on sand and in the water.

According to local officials, the area is a popular spot for sea lion mothers to “raise their young during the annual pupping season” from early May to October.

“Human interactions with sea lions during this period could result in injury or abandonment of sea lion offspring and aggressive behavior from adult sea lions,” according to the City of San Diego official website. Credit: Lauren Bertrand via Storyful
