Sean McComb was left reeling after a controversial defeat in the early hours of Sunday morning in New York, losing via split-decision.

The Belfast boxer faced off against Arnold Barboza Jr for the American's WBO Inter-Continental Super Lightweight title in the co-main event on the Devin Haney v Ryan Garcia card at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. Ahead of the fight, McComb had expressed confidence that sticking to his game plan would see him through, and he executed it flawlessly.

However, two judges scored the bout 96-94 and 97-93 to Barboza, while the other favoured McComb with a score of 98-92. Promoter Eddie Hearn voiced his disbelief at the disparity in the scorecards, stating it made "absolutely no sense at all".

Fellow Belfast boxer Caoimhin Agyarko echoed this sentiment, branding it "one of the worst decisions" he's ever witnessed in boxing. Throughout the ten-round contest, Barboza appeared to struggle with McComb's style, with the southpaw causing the defending champion significant trouble - clearly visible on the 32 year old's face by the end of the fight.

The result was met with boos from the crowd, leaving McComb, his coach Pete Taylor, and the rest of his team in shock, reports the Irish Mirror.

Matchroom boss Hearn, speaking on DAZN, questioned: ""How on earth do you have a scorecard that is 98-92 for McComb and 97-93 for Barboza? Makes absolutely no sense at all. I thought McComb won. The wideness of the scorecards, that has to be impossible. It just doesn't make sense."

Following this result, Barboza's record now stands at an impressive 30-0, while McComb's has moved to 18-2.
