New images have been released of a luxury hotel that will open in Newcastle city centre later this year.

Bespoke Hotels, which describes itself as the UK’s largest independent hotel group, plans to open Hotel Gotham Newcastle in the city’s former police station, courts and fire station building on Pilgrim Street in the autumn.

The hotel will initially feature 60 bedrooms, along with a restaurant and bar, complete with a DJ booth, in the former fire station. A further 30 rooms will be added next year, along with an event space that can host up to 120 guests, in the old police station and courts complex.

The Hotel Gotham brand currently has just a single site, a five-star hotel in Manchester that has drawn big names from the city’s sporting and showbusiness scenes. That venue was recently sold to Leonardo Hotels, but new Hotel Gothams are currently being developed in Newcastle and Bristol.

Thomas Greenall, chief executive officer at Bespoke Hotels, said: “We remain custodians of the Gotham brand, and are dedicated to its vision and reputation, putting all our efforts behind the two new locations – Hotel Gotham Newcastle and Hotel Gotham Bristol – building on our successes by exploring new opportunities that heighten our brand and bring new experiences for our guests.”

The development was giving planning permission earlier this year. It is part of a massive re-development of the Pilgrim Street area which also includes the Bank House office development and the creation of a huge HMRC office on the site of the former Odeon cinema and other buildings.

Bespoke Hotels has previously announced plans to expand its portfolio this year, including plans for new hotels in the North East.

As well as Hotel Gotham in Newcastle, the company is set to open the Bailiffgate Hotel in Alnwick later this year, and also took control of Lumley Castle, at Chester-le-Street in County Durham, in partnership with the property’s owner Lord Scarbrough, after it had fallen into administration. Bespoke Hotels, which is based near Manchester, also operates the George Hotel at Chollerford, near Hexham.
