See the Moment Takeoff Is Aborted After Tires Blow Out on American Airlines Flight

An American Airlines flight was forced to abort takeoff after blowing out its tires on Wednesday, July 10.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) said in a statement that the incident occurred shortly before 8:00 a.m., as American Airlines Flight 590 was scheduled to travel to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport from Tampa International Airport.

Flight crew members reported the aircraft having "multiple blown tires," and passengers were deplaned on the taxiway before being bussed back to the terminal.

A video of the incident filmed by Capt. Steven Markovich and uploaded on YouTube shows one of the plane's rear tires breaking apart as the aircraft accelerated on the runway.

After dark black smoke and fire sparks soon appeared, the plane was seen decreasing speed and making a stop. The nearly eight-minute clip later showed emergency response vehicles arriving on the scene.

A social media user claiming to have been on the flight commented underneath Markovich's video that the plane was "halfway down the runway and getting up to speed when we heard [a] loud bang and felt a shudder and braked hard."

"There wasn't much runway left when we finally stopped, fully loaded and four hours of fuel. When we stopped, the captain said the firetrucks were coming only out of an abundance of caution, but from row 30, we could see flames," the traveler recalled, noting that the "tires on one side shredded and burned, the other two were flat."

"I'm very appreciative the pilot kept it under control, and it didn't blow out any later in the takeoff," the commenter added.

"American Airlines flight 590 with service from Tampa (TPA) to Phoenix (PHX) experienced a mechanical issue on the runway prior to taking off," a spokesperson for the airline said in a statement to PEOPLE. "Customers safely deplaned and were bussed to the terminal. We never want to disrupt our customers' travel plans and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused."

There were also no injuries among the 174 customers and six crew members aboard, the airline said, adding that the issue "involved some of the aircraft's tires." The customers left TPA on a replacement flight, the airline said.
