Rivian debuted the R2 SUV today and said the new compact model will target a starting price of $45,000 when it goes on sale in the first half of 2026.
The R2 looks quite similar to the larger R1S, but its smaller size and lower price is intended to broaden Rivian's appeal.
The R2 is similar in size to the BMW X3 and Hyundai Tucson SUVs, but its electric powertrain puts it in the same segment as the Tesla Model Y.
Adventure seekers will be happy to know that the brand will offer some cool accessories for the R2, including this rooftop tent called Rivian Treehouse.
The Rivian R2's interior borrows styling elements from the larger R1 models and, like its stablemates, it features a large digital display screen and a digital gauge cluster.
The R2's cabin features two rows of seats with room for five riders.
The wood trim on the dashboard and the anodized trim on the steering wheel look rugged and upscale.
There's plenty of cargo space behind the rear seat, but Rivian has also engineered the second and first rows to be able to fold flat to create room for two to snuggle up in sleeping bags during a camping trip.
Storage cubbies are integrated throughout the cabin, including dual gloveboxes on the dashboard.
Several accessories will be available, including a bike rack and this hitch-mounted cargo box.
