See smoke billowing from disused Newcastle property as arson investigation launched

An investigation is under way after a suspected arson attack at a disused residential building in Newcastle.

Firefighters were called to a blaze at a property behind Gosforth Race Course at around 8.30pm on Tuesday. Three crews from West Denton and Gosforth Community Fire Stations attended and located a fire on the first floor of the building.

The fire was extinguished in around 20 minutes, with and investigation now launched to establish the cause of the fire. A Northumbria Police spokesman said the fire is being treated as suspected arson.

He said: “Around 8.40pm last night (Tuesday) we received a report of a fire at a disused residential building behind Gosforth Race Course in Newcastle. Emergency services and partners attended the scene, and the fire was extinguished.

“Thankfully, no-one was found to have been injured in the incident. We are treating the fire as suspected arson and enquiries are ongoing."

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We can confirm on the evening of Tuesday 4th June, three of our fire appliances from West Denton and Gosforth Community Fire Stations were in attendance at a building fire in Gosforth, Newcastle.

“We received an emergency call at 8.29 pm and when crews arrived on scene they quickly located a fire on the first floor of a disused two-storey property. No persons were reported present in the building.

“Our appliances left the incident at 8.47 pm once the fire was safely extinguished. We are now working alongside colleagues at Northumbria Police to investigate the cause of the fire.”
