Rogue One: A Star Wars Story's ending has been merged with the start of A New Hope, and we're only surprised it's taken this long.

Gareth Edwards's well-received spin-off ends literally seconds before A New Hope kicks off, with Princess Leia receiving the plans for the Death Star despite Darth Vader's best attempts.

And this new video showcases just how perfect Rogue One's ending is.

However, it might not have always been that way.

Rogue One's ending come with a fair amount of heartbreak as our heroes Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) perish on Scarif, but it wasn't originally going to be so dark.

"A rebel ship came down and got them off the surface. The transfer of the plans happened later. They jumped away and later [Leia's] ship came in from Alderaan to help them," screenwriter Gary Whitta explained.

But Whitta and Edwards soon realised that the only way Rogue One could end was with the tragic option.

We were also robbed of seeing Ben Mendelsohn's fiendish Director Orson Krennic meet an even nastier fate.

Rather than being shot by Cassian and left to die as his own Death Star blows up the Imperial base on Scarif, it turns out that he was going to survive the blast, only to then be killed by Darth Vader for his failure.

He probably got off lightly.
